Emergence occurs when the N+1 level of a system acquires some property that the N level of a system does not have. For example, the brain as a whole seems to possess a psychology, whereas the neurons do not.
Reductionists believe that the psychology of a brain can be explained by accounting for all of its parts, while holists do not believe such a thing.
