Dissipative structures are systems that operate far away from thermodynamic equilibrium. Such systems are characterized by two criteria: 1. Dissipative structures operate in a stable state far from thermodynamic equilibrium. 2. Dissipative structures are energetically open to the environment. Generally, such a state is maintained by [[Feedback Loops]]. When a system acquires a feedback loop that allows it to move away from thermodynamic equilibrium, it becomes nonlinear and exhibits an [[Emergence|emergent]] level of order. Dissipative structures increase in complexity and order as they pass through [[Bifurcation Points]]. --- #Systems #Physics #Complexity *May 29, 2021* #2021/5
